The bars are cut by hand on a wooden table. No maker's name is printed on the label — only the recipe.

The slope

Herbs for the shampoo bar are gathered in the hills around Nyingchi — red flower, aged ginger, cypress leaf, lingzhi, angelica. They are dried, weighed, and sent to Chengdu, where the bars are made.

Two hands cupping water from a steaming copper basin.

The ritual

Warm water, two hands.

A basin of warm water and a bar in the palm. The herbal bar for hair, the rose bar for the face. Lather slowly, rinse, and let the water carry the rest away.

A valley village and a white stupa under long lines of prayer flags.

The place

A valley under snow.
